About the Council
Regulating nursing and midwifery practice in the public interest.
Protecting the public since 1963
The Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize (NMCB) was established through the Nurses and Midwives Act (1963) to protect the public through the regulation of nursing and midwifery practice in Belize.
The Council reviews the educational qualifications of nurses who apply to work in Belize and determines their eligibility to take the appropriate examination. Successful candidates who satisfy the Council’s requirements may be entered on the relevant professional register.
What the Council is responsible for
Set standards for nursing and midwifery education.
Conduct examinations for nurses.
Register duly qualified nurses and midwives.
Keep an official register of nurses and midwives.
Take disciplinary action when required in cases of conviction or misconduct.
Representation from practice, education and the public
The NMCB is made up of 13 members who represent the nursing practice and education sectors. Two members of the public and four members of the Nursing Association of Belize also serve on the Council.
The Council meets quarterly. The registrar and a secretary carry out its day-to-day functions.
